How We Help with Fibromyalgia

According to the American College of Rheumatology, Fibromyalgia sufferers’ symptoms of Fibromyalgia usually start within five years of an injury to the upper neck.

When Fibromyalgia is diagnosed, it is based on a thorough physical exam in which several pre-determined tender points are palpated/touched by the examiner.  If 11 of the 18 pre-determined points are sore, the person is said to have Fibromyalgia.  Notice on the chart featured in the video how 10 out of the 18 pre-determined tender points are located in the neck and upper shoulders.

Here’s what typically happens to Fibromyalgia sufferers:

  • Injury occurs to the upper neck
  • The fibrous or connective tissues (as in FIBRO myalgia) stretch, tear and become injured
  • The muscles (as in fibro MY algia) are recruited into “battle” to stabilize the spine and prevent the underlying injury from getting worse
  • Widespread bruising pain (as in fibro my ALGIA) and fatigue develops

Additionally, clouded thinking (“fibro fog”) and digestive trouble can accompany the pain of Fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a multi-faceted health problem.  Many times the underlying cause of the problem dates back to an actual structural injury in the top of the spine.  Because of this, it may be wise to consider seeing an upper cervical chiropractor in Rancho Bernardo.
